- Osh State University traces its history back to 1939, from the teacher’s institute, which in 1951 was transformed into the Osh State Pedagogical Institute. Since 1992, the university has been functioning as the Osh State University.
- The University is one of the largest universities in Central Asia, graduating specialists at all levels of education in a wide range of areas. For a special contribution to the development of the socio-economic, spiritual and intellectual potential of the Kyrgyz Republic, by the Decree of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic dated August 30, 2017, UE No. 189 of Osh State University was awarded the Order of “Dank”.
- The university has 17 faculties, 3 institutes, 6 colleges, 105 departments, 6 gymnasium schools, 27 educational buildings, 10 student dormitories, 2 medical clinics, 1 student dispensary, 2 boarding houses, 18 sports complexes, 1 library and 17 reading rooms, an electronic library, 30 teaching, cultural, aesthetic, resource centers, laboratories and concert halls.
- Currently, about 50 thousand students study at the university, of which more than 13 thousand are students from near and far abroad countries, 264 are graduate students, 2172 are undergraduates, 35 are PhD students and 764 are students of gymnasium schools.
- The University consistently ranks first in the annual independent international rankings organized by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic. According to the results of the international rating IAAR EUR – 2021, Osh State University was recognized as the best in the nomination “IAAR EUR Multidisciplinary University Award” (multidisciplinary university). In 2022, Osh State University entered the TOP-3 of the best universities in the Eurasian space.
- An innovative system of science-production-commercialization is being implemented. Over the past two years, funds in the amount of 22 million soms have been allocated for research projects. For the first time, doctoral programs (PhD) in 7 areas have been opened and are being implemented. The activities of the scientific journal of the university have been transferred to the electronic platform Open Journal System (OJS).
- The university has agreements on bilateral cooperation with more than 300 higher education institutions in 30 countries, most of which are included in the world ranking of world universities. Today Osh State University is on the way to University 4.0 and entering the QS World University Rankings
- Currently, 20 international joint double degree educational programs are being successfully implemented with universities in China, Russia and Kazakhstan.
- In 2023, an agreement was signed with Lomonosov Moscow State University on the opening of the Lomonosov Center at Osh State University, within which, from 2023, joint double degree programs in 3 areas will be implemented.
- By the decree of the President Sadyr Japarov dated July 18, 2022, Osh State University was given a “Special Status”.
- The Youth Business Park is actively working at Osh State University – a business platform for the development and implementation of student start-up ideas and projects
- Every year, about 500 students and undergraduates and 300 teachers undergo training, internships, exchange of experience under academic mobility programs at 300 universities of near and far abroad
- All university activities have been digitalised.
- The top 10 students receive a nominal scholarship of $1,200 per year
- 5 million soms are provided for social support for needy students and incentives for winners of olympiads, international festivals, competitions and sports tournaments
- The educational process, research activities are carried out by 2469 teachers, including 108 doctors of sciences, professors, 475 candidates of sciences, associate professors, 4 PhD doctors. 1 Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, 3 Corresponding Members of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, 3 Laureates of the State Prize in Science and Technology, 2 People’s Artists of the Kyrgyz Republic, 5 Academicians and 6 Corresponding Members of the Engineering Academy, 8 Honored Workers of Education of the Kyrgyz Republic, 4 Honored Doctors of the Kyrgyz Republic, 4 Honored Workers of Science of the Kyrgyz Republic, 1 Honored Worker of Agriculture of the Kyrgyz Republic, 1 Honored Worker of Culture of the Kyrgyz Republic, 1 Honored Trainer of the Kyrgyz Republic.
Osh State University was founded on 24 May 1951 as Osh State Pedagogical Institute. It achieved status of the University on 17 june 1992. The city of Osh provides a unique setting for the urban campus of Osh State University.
